On State Route 203 east of Baker City, the 95 degree F, bone-dry heat made the cold rushing waters of Eagle Creek seem like an impossibility, and the existence of dense, cool forests nearby was even more unbelievable. Most travelers on I-84, the major interstate through this area, see nothing of the Range as they zoom along at 70 mph on their busy journeys between Portland, Oregon; Boise, Idaho and Salt Lake City.
